A History Left Behind happy eighteenth, chi

Everywhere he goes results in a heartbreak, and only one person has the foresight to see this when he stumbles along that person’s path. Perhaps it is because he’s walking in a world drowning in black rain or because the blindfold is only making everything black. It’s not a good time to believe in only what is rational, what is up and down, for trying to think logically would only cause the gears in his head to rust.

“Too pretty and too pale,” the Nobody whispers, and Riku knows he has been unintentionally caught into an unlucky trap.

He never means any harm, and ruining Roxas’ true blue eyes may only break the world’s black heart, but Riku has to remind himself constantly that Sora’s eyes aren’t so agonizingly flat. But this doesn’t make sense, because he’s never looked at Sora’s eyes as closely as he has with Roxas’ eyes. Subconsciously, he pulls the ends of the blindfold tighter and drops down in front of the Nobody.

“You can’t break anything that isn’t there to break,” Roxas warns. He’s probably right — it may be a lost battle, either way. Even so, Riku shakes his head, his untamable hair hiding a fragile, deceitful smile.

“You act as if I have a history of breaking hearts.”

“My heart tells me that you have such a history,” Roxas contradicts with a lethal grin. He steps forward, walking away from the moon’s loving light, and observes Riku’s hidden face with blue, blue eyes. In this world, the moonlight never touches Riku’s body, but it does gets soaked up in Roxas’ skin. When Roxas speaks, he jumps, startled for no real reason.

“If I asked you to break my fake heart, would you?” he proposes, the grin growing wider. Riku swallows and reminds himself once again: Sora’s grins will never be poisonous, Sora’s grins are never hidden sneers. “I’m curious to know if physical pain is the same as emotional pain.”

“I could just tell you,” Riku says, hoping to spare the boy.

“How boring,” Roxas sighs blandly, and disappears in black.

It’s a boring existence in a boring sea of stars, anyway, so he plays along in the other’s game. DiZ would be furious, but what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him. After all, it would be easier to break the enemy and then capture him, despite the lack of morals in it. Considering all he has done in the past few months, though, Riku is sure that morality no longer cares for him.

He begins with quick fights in the black alleyways, diving in for a few sharp blows and then melting back into the wall. It drives XIII mad and breathless, just the way Riku wants him to be. The duels get longer as the moon moves higher overhead, until Roxas lets himself be trapped on the pavement and kissed hard enough to bleed from his gums. Blue, blue eyes look black under his eyelashes as he licks up the blood from his mouth. Roxas looks as though he wants to say something, but it’s doubtful that he knows the words. Instead, he hums and bites Riku back for all it’s worth.

“Don’t leave,” he breathes between them. Riku pulls back and notices the absence of moonlight on Roxas’ face.

“I can’t leave something behind if it’s not there.”

Roxas’ eyes widen, the blue going pale. Mission accomplished, but the feeling is as bland as those eyes.

It takes several days to get over his heartbreak, but Roxas cannot blame anyone — he wanted it in the first place, and got it without error. There is nothing to explain his pacing around his room, or his lack of appetite, or why everything turns black wherever he steps. The breaking of a heart, he realizes, is just as empty as his existence, and he leaves the moon behind, the lust for feeling suddenly gone from his desires.

Still, it is not too dark outside for him, and he can truly see Riku’s eyes. He gets over his heartbreak quicker than the time it took to receive it once he notices that the moonlight now won’t leave Riku alone, revealing his intentions everywhere he goes.
